leave your nets behind...

Simon and his fellow fishermen had been fishing all night...not a single catch. As Jesus was teaching the crowds He gazed upon them, sat in the boat, and told them to let their nets out. They were tired, worn from the long evening, and were washing their nets. Yet, they pushed out, and put their nets down at His word.

The net would start to pull and tug and soon they would pull it up and not only did the catch fill just one boat, it filled two - the weight of the bounty sinking the boat! The hoots and hollers and high fives must have been overwhelming for the people to witness that were standing on the shore. I can only imagine their amazement at this miracle. And quickly after, Simon fell to his knees to proclaim that he was a sinner – and Jesus must leave him, he was not worthy. But Jesus stays. And more than that, Jesus offers him a place at His side to become a fisher of men.

“Then they brought the boats to land, left everything, and followed Him.” Luke 5:11. Even in the joy and excitement of this historic and miraculous catch, even though I am sure Simon and his crew counted up how much it was worth (experts have said it was at least worth about 25 years of salary), they left it all. They left the fame and the fortune. Right there. On the shore. And did not look back.

These men were risking it all. They worked hard, were resilient and dedicated, fishing year round, in the blaring heat of summer or the frosty cold of winter, usually fishing in the dark at night. They had to make their own nets, mend their own nets, and spend a lot of time doing so. Yet, Jesus saw their worth in something other than just the day to day. And He sees worth in us beyond the day to day too. He is beckoning us to come and be fishers of men and to leave all that we feel is worthy behind, for the only one that is worthy of our praise and the only hope we have. Are you willing to leave the pain, your hurt, your brokenness, your dreams, your future behind....for the One who is able to do far more than we could ever ask or imagine?

There's a song that's inside of my soul It's the one that I've tried to write over and over again I'm awake in the infinite cold But you sing to me over and over again

Sing to me the song of the stars Of your galaxy dancing and laughing and laughing again When it feels like my dreams are so far Sing to me of the plans that you have for me over again

I give you my destiny I'm giving you all of me I want your symphony Singing in all that I am At the top of my lungs I'm giving it back

So I lay my head back down And I lift my hands and pray To be only yours I pray to be only yours I pray to be only yours I know now you’re my only hope
